The penetration rate of OLED panels will reach 3% by 2021

According to TrendForce's latest survey, global TV panel shipments reached 135.2 million units in 1H21, up 3.5% year on year, due to aggressive purchasing activities by TV manufacturers.

It is worth noting that high-end OLED TV panels and 8K LCD TV panels show opposite trends. Due to LGD's capacity expansion and the narrowing gap between OLED panel prices and LCD panel prices, LGD's market share reached 2.6% in 1H21 (there is room for further growth).

On the other hand, the latter's market share declined to just 0.2% in 1H21 due to the general reluctance of panel suppliers to produce 8K LCD TV panels due to the low yield of these panels.

TrendForce's findings show that Chinese panel suppliers have a 58.3% share of the TV panel market, which is nearly 5 percentage points higher than their market share in the first half of 20 years, thanks to an increase in the number of their production lines. In contrast, the market share of Taiwanese suppliers declined by 2.2 percentage points from the level of 1H20 to 21.1% in 1H21.

The decline is due to their limited capacity and the reallocation of some of their TV panel capacity to IT products. Korean suppliers' market share also fell to 14.3 percent after SDC closed its LCD fabs L7-2 and L8-1-2 in South Korea and sold its Gen 8.5 fab in Suzhou to Huaxing Optronics. Finally, due to SDP's Gen 10.5 capacity expansion, The Japanese supplier's market share increased to 6.3%.

OLED TV panels are among the higher-end products, and it should be noted that LGD is the sole supplier of these panels. Not only has LGD expanded capacity at its OLED panel plant in Guangzhou, but its TV customers are increasingly willing to buy OLED panels now that the gap between OLED panel prices and LCD prices is narrowing.

As a result, the penetration rate of OLED panels in the TV panel market grew to 2.6% in the first half of 21, with approximately 3.556 million units shipped during the whole period. In addition, given that OLED panel capacity at the Guangzhou plant reached 90,000 units/month in 2Q21, TrendForce expects annual shipments of OLED TV panels to reach 8 million units in 2021, representing a 3% penetration rate in the overall TV panel market.

On the other hand, the penetration rate of 8K LCD TV panels in the TV panel market was only 0.2% in 1H21, as panel suppliers' focus on maximizing profit and yield resulted in their relatively low willingness to manufacture these products. On the demand side, customers have been reluctant to purchase these panels as suppliers' prices have remained high.

In terms of panel suppliers, Huaxin in particular has benefited from its unique customer base structure, enabling it to account for half of the 8K LCD TV panel market, with AU Optronics in second place. The current market shares of China Star and AU optronics are 54.4 percent and 22.6 percent, respectively.

TrendForce forecasts a penetration rate of 0.2% for 8K LCD TV panels in 2021, as the growth of these products is limited by their relatively high price and current lack of 8K content.
